Playing Tennis

Tennis is a game played with rackets by two players for singles match or four players for doubles.  The game originated in Europe in the late 19th century and since then, has become a popular sport all across the globe.  Among the most popular tennis tournaments are: Australian OPen, French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. 

Tennis is played by people of all ages and gender.   To play tennis, you will need the following tennis equipment and other essentials:

1. Tennis Rackets or Tennis Racquets:  A tennis racket is a bat with a large loop head and a long handle.  It has a string mesch stretched across it.  It can be made of wood, metal or other synthetic material.  It is used a teninis player to hit the tennis ball during a game of tennis.

2. Tennis Ball: Like most other balls used in sports, a tennis ball is made up of soft, hollow, air-filled rubber.  It is coated with synthetic fur and looks similar to a baseball.  It is commonly yellow and is sometimes white.  However, most tennis players prefers the yellow ball since it is easier to see than the white ball. 

3. Tennis court: A tennis court is a firm rectangular surface with a low net standing across the center.  Tennis courts are 78 feet long and 27 feet wide.  It is divided into 4 types:

a. Clay Courts - made of crushed shale, stone or brick.  It is either red or green.

b. Hard Courts - made of ceramic or plastic.  It is considered faster than clay but slower than grass courts.

c.  Grass Courts - the fastest type of tennis court.  It is consists of grass grown on very hard-packed soil that is similar to the ones you find in the golf greens.  This type of court is found in the Centre Court at Wimbledon.

d.  Suspended Courts: usually made of polypropylene plastic interlocking tile.  This type of court is usually placed on top of a hard surface such as asphalt or concrete and is suspended by approximately 3/4 inch acove the hard surface, allowing water and ir to flow under it.

4.  Net: the piece of netting that stretches across the center of the tennis court and is help up by two posts.

5. Tennis Apparel:  

a. Men’s Tennis Apparel:  Tennis Shoes, shorts with deep pockets for the tennis balls, breathable and comfortable shirts. Wearing headbands or hats are also good, especially when you sweat a lot.

b. Women’s Tennis Apparel: Tennis skirts, t-shirt and tennis shoes.  A hat or a headband is also good.

Tennis equipment are available in a tennis store.
